Cartoon of 11 September 2021 on CTXT

Yesterday was the annual convention of clichés and catchphrases about 9/11, with the added bonus of marking two decades since the terrorist attacks.

"The day that changed the world" and "Where were you and what were you doing on September 11, 2001? were two of the informative opening statements. The first is utter nonsense because the world had already changed and the attacks were just a chapter, more "spectacular", of course, for the iconic photos of war with a western scenario.

The other, the one about where we were when the planes crashed or the towers fell, is one of the most cliché ones.. I don't think there is a living thing that hasn't told it once, even more than twice and three times.

It is inevitable to remember the days we consider special, but I wonder who really cares about what countryman X from the village of Torre de las Alcaparras de Abajo was doing on 11 September 2011.

Yes, OK, the media sell it for the supposedly human stories and the impact these events have on everyday life and all that, but it has that congenital egomaniacal streak that characterises us, whereby we put the self above everything else.

Since the US overthrew Mohammad Omar in 2001, which it had aided economically and militarily during the first Afghan war (1978-1992) by refusing the extradition of Osama Bin Laden without a formal extradition request, more than 150,000 people have been killed and some $978 billion has been burned by the US, according to a 2019 Brown University study.

Spain poured more than 3.6 billion euros into Afghanistan until 2014, according to Ministry of Defence data. The result of all these "investments", you know him.
