Broken links cause a loss of authority (link juice) and eat into thecrawl budget, as search engine bots waste time indexing HTTP 404 responses instead of valuable content. They also degrade the user experience by disrupting the flow of navigation and increasing the bounce rate. By fixing them with 301 redirects or updating the URLs, you optimise website crawling, preserve the flow of link equity to the destination pages and strengthen the site architecture to avoid indirect penalties in organic search rankings.
Whilst carrying out my routine check for broken links using my usual plugin, Broken Link Checker, I discovered that the local scan wasn’t working. So I took a very simple function I had lying around and tweaked it a bit with Gemini’s help to make it more user-friendly and to carry out the scan and fix of broken links.
Whilst broken links are springing up like mushrooms, on this journey I’ve noticed a significant exodus of Twitter (X) links, with accounts disappearing in droves. Hundreds of accounts and/or tweets that no longer exist have already appeared, but I’ll leave this topic for a future piece on the death of the web as we knew it.
To use this feature, simply add the snippet to the functions.php file of your template or child theme, or to your snippets plugin. You will then find the tool and its options under Tools/Link Inspector, as detailed below.
1 - Status types. Here you can choose from more than 10 status types for a selective scan.
2 - The ‘Start Continuous Scan’ button runs a scan without interruption. Although it shouldn’t, it may have some impact on the site’s loading speed. I’ve had it running for hours without any issues.
3 - Batch scanning. 10 entries will be scanned each time you press this button.
4 - Export/Import JSON. As the plugin does not write anything to the database, if you close your browser you will lose the list; to recover anything you cannot remember having done, you will always need to save your scan list using ‘Export’. To restore it, simply import it.
5 - Information about the scanning process.
6 - Filter by type. Once you have finished the scan, you can filter the list view by status.
7 - Post/Page. Here you’ll find a link to edit the post and another one labelled ‘View’ to visit it.
8 – The link anchor text, so you can find it more quickly.
9 - The URL of the broken link.
10 - HTTP status code of the link.
11 - Action. The close button simply removes that row from the list view. It does not edit, delete or add anything.
12 - Replacement URL. Field where you enter the replacement link.
13 - Search on Archive.org. Clicking here will open the Wayback Machine, which will display a list of available dates for copies of your URL (if any are available), so you can choose the one that interests you most.
14 - Remove link. This option removes the hyperlink whilst retaining the link text in the post or page, in case you do not have an alternative URL or do not wish to add one.
Let me say straight away that this is a one-off function; you’re advised to remove it once you’ve finished cleaning. I don’t think I’ll be making any further changes to it, but if I do, I’ll update the code right here.
Although the resulting code ended up being too long for a snippet – which is supposed to be something short or a fragment – it works quite well. That said, it could still be refined to avoid certain 404 false positives and improved with multiple-action selection, but if you don’t have too many links and don’t have the time to check them manually, it’s fully functional.
For bulk link replacements, you can rely on classic dedicated plugins such as Better Search Replace and Search Regex.
